FINALLY… I've always wanted to build shelves into the alcoves next to the fireplace in the dining room/office. Mainly so that I could order our CDs alphabetically.
Call me a nerd, but really… I don't have the time to go hunting for things when they're strewn higgledy piggledy (can you tell I'm going to turn 40 this year?) throughout the house.
I talked about it for years. And I was well fed up with the clutter.
Well… the other day I finally dragged the boys down to Danahers for timber. I'd taken all my measurements beforehand and drawn a plan. My intention was to hand the picture to the nice man at the timber shop, have him cut everything to size and take it home to assemble it into the nook.
I had a minor crisis of confidence when I got there. The sound of Guy's voice predicting another of my 'unfinished projects' resounded in my ears. I also remembered that sometimes I miss the spot that tells me it's a metre and 10 centimetres plus three more I'm measuring, rather than a metre and 3 centimetres.
So I chickened out and had him cut the lengths a little longer than I'd written down, thinking I'd use our jigsaw to trim the excess. Of course I'd bought new blades for our jigsaw so I wouldn't have any trouble cutting the hardwood I was purchasing.
To cut a long story short; the blades didn't fit, the alcove was not the same width at the front and the back (different plaster thicknesses, old house) I had to saw everything by hand, rasp a bit, curse and gasp a bit – but, with a bit of help from Guy we did it, we did it, yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!
I've told Guy he has to call me Supergirl for the rest of the weekend!
