The boys' room is a horrible mess. The "Keep Out" sign on the door serves as a warning of danger to potential visitors as much as a way for the boys to protect their privacy.
But I will tolerate this mess no more! I want the boys to have a nice room; one that is organised and looks like the kids rooms in magazines. And so I have spent my break from work making this happen. It's not finished and I go back to work tomorrow but we've made SO much progress. Mainly due to Neil – the pedal steel player in Guy's band and all-round-handy-with-the-tools kind of bloke.
We live in a solid brick californian bungalow… unrenovated, unextended and probably a disappointment to some of our neighbours who are building huge McMansions in our street and suburb. But, despite sometimes feeling like a squatter for not 'improving' our house like everyone else, we like it here and are slowly making the minimalist changes needed to keep us functioning and happy. For now, at least, we are avoiding the open plan kitchen/family room extension that everyone seems to be putting on their period homes, which will date the extension as surely as the facade dates the home… (Cal Bung circa 1930s, extension early 2000s – ).
The boys room was last painted (save for a feature wall a couple of years back) in 2001. During this period it was occupied by 2 toddlers who have now grown to school age. Past (I hope!) the age of writing on walls and smearing dirty hands on everything. The room's yellow walls have become gross, and the original solid plaster cracked and hanging from the bricks. I'll tell the rest of the story in pictures.
Original Yellow Wall with Todd Parr inspired spaceship mural painted by yours truly.
Crappy Plaster removed – what a mess!
New plaster board stuck in hole and joined.
New plasterboard on walls where the little green man used to reside.
I'm showing you these so we have something to compare it to when I straighten it out 🙂
I'm a bit of an ikea sucker when it comes to the kids room 🙂 (also witnessed below)
One of two loft beds – this was after I painted the wall, but before I decided the plaster all had to be redone. I'm not very good at planning things 🙂 We subsequently decided to put carpet in all the bedrooms as well so the beds won't be up again for a couple of weeks. (PS. Anyone want to buy a bunk bed. Only 18 months old and in great condition save a few stickers that need soaking off)
So… I'm showing you all this stuff so that you'll nag me sometime in the future to show you the finished room. The thought of this will keep me motivated until the job is done!
Auf wiedersehen for now. New kitty arriving next weekend so expect some cute puppy and kitten photos soon too. (and maybe some crafts!)
